Wood,
like many other mediums, is in a constant state of change. This is the
beginning of design. Just as the leaves of a tree wither in the fall
and burst forth in the spring, wood must be allowed its own freedom of
movement. The physical movement with the seasons along with the
inherent movement of a good design will allow a piece to come alive and
appear to dance on the floor where it sets. Design is about balance -
symmetry without boredom, and energy without fluff. With a bit of
coaxing, the wood will almost tell the artist what it needs: Sometimes,
it seems the artist is merely the vessel for running the machines. Good
furniture can last a lifetime, or several lifetimes, yet never get old,
and can fill the soul with all the emotion of a well groomed symphony,
or hit you in the face like rock-n-roll.
