Knowing
what will happen before the hammer strikes the chisel, how the wood
will change in six months, and how to plan a piece of furniture from
the back forward is anticipation. To consciously take anticipation past
the collector's need for a certain sized drawer is to realize that
woodworking is more about working with
the wood than working on
the wood. This is where the journey begins - the realization that to
create heirloom furniture, you must build with honest well fitting
joints. You must work with the confidence to know when you can pound
away on one part of a half-blind dovetail, and gently pare away a
different area. Learning to anticipate puts the work into the company
of the craftsmen who came before us, who left the furniture we marvel
at today -so we say things like "I
wonder how they did all that with just hand tools?"
